Evidence-first GEO

The GEO playbook.

Answer engines cite sources they can verify. Every opportunity Prefometry finds maps to one of four plays, chosen by what the engine actually cited — not generic advice. This is the same logic behind the recommended play on each opportunity.

For institutional citations

Verify the source's scope before any outreach

Governments, research institutes, and NGOs publish curated tool lists with a narrow scope — often free or open-source tools only, and rarely with a submission process. Weeks can be spent pitching a source that structurally cannot include you.

Open the cited source first. Confirm what it actually lists and whether an editorial contact exists. If your product fits, pitch facts, not adjectives. If it does not fit, stop — and invest the same effort into the own-the-content play for that query instead.

For vendor and editorial citations

Become the citable source with your own objective page

Most “best X software” answers are shaped by pages vendors and listicles published first. When the cited page belongs to someone else, you cannot be added to it — but you can publish the page engines would rather cite.

Build an objective comparison page for the exact observed query: include competitors and free alternatives honestly, lead with a comparison table, state pricing model and team-size fit, and mirror the question in FAQ-style headings. Then earn at least one independent third-party link — engines weight independent corroboration heavily.

For review-platform citations

Build the review profile engines quote

Answer engines routinely assemble vendor shortlists from review platforms. Without a listing carrying real, recent reviews, you are invisible to that entire class of answers regardless of your own content.

Claim your profiles on the platforms cited for your queries, invite verified customers to review honestly, and keep pricing and feature facts current. Re-check quarterly — stale profiles stop being cited.

For press citations

Compete for the press slot with your own announcement

“Leading platforms” queries often cite press releases. A factual announcement — a launch, a customer outcome, or original data — can take the same citation slot.

Distribute through channels answer engines crawl, keep an online newsroom on your domain, and link the release to citable facts such as your pricing and documentation pages.
